I was asked to share today on the Blog what time you have to leave your rooms if you stay over.
Well, the answer is 9.30 am. However, we have a luggage room where you an leave everything, a nice warm cosy library to study on if you need space for that and a JCR if you need TV and newspapers to take your mind off interviews.
Please do observe the time as we need to clean rooms and change beds ready for the next person. You can get into rooms from about noon so you can see why we need you out! Thanks for being considerate!

Hello. I am coming up the night before my interview and I wanted to ask if while you dont supply us with a dinner, is it possible we can buy the meals instead on a meal ticket system? Or is it best we find a restaurant in town?

OK, this is a little thorny!
We HAVE to book meals (which we offer for free). Only about 20 people are eating at any dinner maximum and maybe 40 at a big lunch. As interviews go on, it reduces even more so it needs to be predictable for the kitchens or there's a lot of waste.
We don't charge for meals/offer them for sale because it adds another level of complication and we'd have to charge VAT and it would make numbers unpredictable etc., etc., etc. It just gets complicated. And the catering manager said no and I need him to be nice! (He's really VERY helpful and patient).
The other reason we don't offer dinner to those coming from the UK who can control their arrival times a bit better than those on planes is that we don't want to be seen to encourage you to miss more school than you need to. Ideally we'd like you to travel after school if you can. Aren't we mean?
So, yes, sadly, that does mean grabbing some food in town if you're here around that time. If you're here by 6-ish, we'll probably still be interviewing so you can ask sheepdogs in the Porters Lodge but my suggestions if you're eating alone would be a student classic, "Gardis" (The Gardenia) which is a good value Greek takeaway (you can eat in if you want). Ask the porters how to get there. They do kebabs, chips, pizza, lots of good veggie options, salads - it's really not bad. There's also a McDonalds in the same street - no comment. You'll know if it's a night for comfort food. There are lots of better restaurants but it depends how you feel about eating on your own. There may also be other applicants around when you arrive who would be happy to head off for a meal or bar snack together.

It's true. It does! And it's the only free pool table in Cambridge.
